How to replace faucet in bathroom with copper tubes & compression fittings?
I am intending to replace the faucet, sink, and counters in three bathrooms. I am new to DIY, but I believe it can be done without a plumber. Here is my dilemma:
Underneath my sink, there is Copper Tubing coming from the shut-off valves and going to a compression fitting. From the compression fitting, there is another Copper Tube going to the faucet. I unscrewed the nut at the junction and it slides up the tube, but the two tubes do not disconnect. I guess the ring is keeping them intact. How do I go about changing the faucets?
Do I have to cut the copper tube and replace it? Should I pull harder to separate the two tubes after the nut is unscrewed, or is that not going to work? What is the best way to proceed? Thanks for any help!
They should come apart after the compression nut is loose. Pull harder. This is where you crack your knuckles so be careful. Corrosion or deposits are probably holding the two sections together with the compression ring. Try tapping on the tube that will be replaced.
You may want to consider replacing the shut-off valves and tubing above them as well especially if the shutoff valves were hard to turn off. These older parts connected to the new will wear out sooner and you will be back under the sink before you know it.
