HOW MANY NAILS PER SHINGLE?

 

 

It depends on the number of tabs.

 

For example the normal three – tab rectangular asphalt shingles used in USA / Canada need 4 nails: two above the cutouts and two near the edges.

 

In Europe, mostly four-tab asphalt shingles are used and the number of nails needed is 5/shingles.

 

 

More nails are needed:

 

 

- in windy regions

 

- when slopes are very steep, normally bigger than 200%.

 

 

In this case two nails are used above the cutout. So 6 nails will be needed for the 3-tab shingles and 8 nails for the 4-tab shingles.

WHAT ABOUT STAPLING ?

 

 

Stapling is not recommended in Europe and as far as I know also in USA and in Canada.

 

Stapling can easily damage shingles.

 

 

WHERE EXACTLY TO PLACE THE NAILS?

 

 

In Europe we place the nails a little above the sealant strip. The nails are placed 2-3cm above the upper point of the cutout. The nails near the edges should not be closer than 2,5cm from the edges.

 

On no occasion should the nails be driven into discontinuities and problematic points of the substrate.

 

 

HAND NAILING OR PNEUMATIC NAILER?

 

 

Hand nailing is more accurate. It does a better job but it is slower and most expensive. If you cannot afford hand nailing for the whole project, at least use it:

 

 

- near the rakes

 

- for the first course at the eaves

 

- for the ridge and the hips

 

- for the valleys.

 

 

Because hand nailing is more accurate, it will reduce the possibility of wind uplift at this critical regions.

 

The nails should be driven vertically and flush with the upper side of the asphalt shingle securing it in its position.

 

If the nail is overdriven, it will harm the integrity of the asphalt shingle.

 

If the nails are underdriven, they cannot fix / secure the asphalt shingles properly.

 

In the case that the nails are not completely vertical, they will harm the shingle with their heads. These nails should be discarded and replaced.

 

 

CONCLUSION

 

 

Learn the right nailing techniques because they are critical for the expected life and behaviour of the shingles.

Air Compressor?

Thinking of buying a air compressor to run air guns like roofing nailers or framing nailers. Wondering if anyone had any ideas?

There are many different types of air compressors out there. The more portable ones are only going to have a capacity of a few gallons. If you are running 1-2 guns you will probably be fine. If you are planning on using a lot of pneumatic tools at the same time you might want to step up to a 25 gallon or more. Not as portable, but you can set it up on a jobsite and run multiple lines off it. You can get one of those starting at 250 dollars depending on where you shop. You can get package deals that come with a nailer, but those are portables. I would get a compressor with a Direct Drive and go oilless. Easier to maintain, if you use it heavily, drain the water out of it daily.

Tank capacity has everything to do with peformance. Try running a pneumatic drill with a portable air compressor for more than 5 seconds. If you look at the specs on your Air Tools it will tell you the minimum tank capacity required to operate your tools.

In a vapor-compression units most important element is in the compressor. Also being the most important part in the the V.C. Unit it also the most expensive part. There are different types of compressors. The type that is use in refrigeration unit are in two groups. The groups are; positive displacement and rotor-dynamic.

The positive displacement type of compressor works by trapping the refrigerant vapor into an enclosed space and then reducing the volume. By doing this the pressure rises and the volume gets reduced because there is a steady amount of refrigerant that is being trapped each time. Two examples of a positive displacement compressor is a reciprocating or a piston compressor. They are the most commonly used PDC that are used. It can be found in ranges from very little horsepower to very high horse power. The reciprocating compressors work in kind of the same manner as does as a internal combustion engine. Except it works in reverse they have cylinders, pistons, crankshafts, valves and housing blocks.

The rotor-dynamic type of compressor uses the pressure to rise the refrigerant that is provided by rising the kinetic energy to a steadily flowing stream. It does this with a rotating mechanical element and then converting the refrigerant into pressure as it flows through a forked passage. The rotor -dynamic compressors have less vibration because they have a more steady flow. There are to different types of RDC. The first is radial flow. This type of compressor is used in large sized refrigeration units and in air conditioning systems. The rotor -dynamic compressors have less vibration because they have a more steady flow. The second is axial flow. This type is commonly used in gas liquefaction appliance.

Depending on the type of alignment of the motor or external dive it can either be an open, hermetic which is sealed,or a semi-hermetic which is partially closed. The open type is more efficient and it has better flexibility, and also better compressor cooling and service capabilities. Due to the rod having to extend through the seal, you can not completely stop the leaking of refrigerant.

With the hermetic type it is surrounded by a box so you do not get any leaking. It works best in units that capillary tubes for expansion mechanism and are critically charged systems. They do not leak but you can not service this type. Also it is not very flexible It is very hard to change the speed of the cooling. This kind is more commonly used in small refrigerators, air conditioners and water coolers. This type is what is used in your home.

The last is the semi-hermetic. This kind works the same as a hermetic kind except for the box around the equipment so it is easier to maintain. Because it is easier to get to.

How do I remove rust from Magnetic Drill bits?

I have a nice socket Wrench Set with magnetic Drill Bits for a screwdriver. Somehow moisture got into the kit box, and the drill bits are covered with rust. How do I remove the rust from these?

there are several good answers you have received already but let me add mine. Lay all the rusted drill bits and tools on newspaper or a rag then spray with either WD-40 or Rust Buster let them soak a couple minutes then if u have access to a rotary wire wheel use that to remove the rust or use a stiff wire brush.(you can buy a set at Home Depot or Wall Mart or any of those stores for less than $5.00. Anyway use them along with more spray to remove the rust. (Don't use a Grinding Wheel as u will destroy the tools. After removing the rust before storing the tools coat them with a fine coating of vaseline to protect them in the future. (Vaseline is clean and does a fine job). Tape Measure

A 25-foot tape measure will work well for most home jobs. Whether you're measuring for a window treatment, or for new flooring, choose a tape measure that can handle your home's spaces. A smaller, 6- to 12-foot tape measure is ideal for shopping trips or for hanging pictures.

Screwdrivers

While you may have a full collection of screwdrivers, two basic screwdrivers are a must for your household tool kit. Choose a Flat Head screwdriver and Phillips head screwdriver in a medium size, and both in good quality. Smaller screwdrivers come in handy when you need to fix computer equipment or tighten a pair of eyeglasses.

Pliers

Include in your kit an assortment of pliers in various shapes and sizes. Needle-nose pliers are used most often, but also include heavier pliers for removing nails or large staples. Wire cutting pliers are a must for wiring and craft jobs.

Level

No homeowner should be without a level. A quality, sturdy level will provide much-needed assistance in positioning items such as shelves accurately. Levels are also useful for hanging pictures, drilling holes in a level line, or mounting towel bars.

A medium weight hammer can cover most household projects. Include other sizes in your tool kit for more delicate jobs or construction.

Nails and Screws

Purchase prepackaged sets of basic sized nails and screws at your local home center. Place them in a small box with dividers for an assorted collection that will come in handy when hanging pictures or making minor repairs.

Wire Cutters

Too many homeowners consider their everyday scissors as being the tool of choice when it comes to cutting wire. Save those scissors with a pair of wire cutters - ideal for craft projects, electrical repairs, and other household projects.

Spackle and Putty Knife

Spackle is necessary for filling in nail holes prior to painting or to repair scratches or holes in the walls. A small tub of spackle will do nicely for the average homeowner. To apply the spackle, you'll need a putty knife. Putty knives are also useful for scraping paint or repairing wallpaper. They come in metal or plastic and can be purchased inexpensively at your local paint store.

Felt, Plastic and Carpet Dots

Felt pads can also be applied to the bottoms of vases or other decorative items that may scratch a table surface. Plastic or rubber dots can be applied to the back of a framed picture to keep them level. Heavier carpet dots are used to protect chair and table legs from scraping hardwood floors.

Blue Painter's Tape

Resembling plain masking tape, blue painter's tape is blue in color and comes in several widths. Used by professional painters who use the tape to mask off areas they don't want covered in paint, blue tape can be removed from most surfaces without damage. It can also be used for other household projects such as marking stud locations when hanging a picture or installing molding. Blue tape can also be used to tape down runners of kraft paper to protect floors from dirt and scratches when moving.

Utility Knife

A utility knife is useful for opening moving boxes and packages. They can also come handy for wallpapering or craft projects. Homeowners have a variety of Utility Knives from which to choose.

Hammer Drill or Hammer Drill Kit?

So, I know nothing about tools so I'm hoping that someone can help me out with this. I want to buy someone a hammer drill. I know he likes the brand DeWalt and prefers that it has a cord. He had pointed to one in a store once, model number DW511, but I don't know if that's the one he wants or just looked at it because it was the only one there at the time. Anyway, I was looking on DeWalt's website and they have several different ones. My biggest confusion is not knowing what the difference between a Hammer Drill and a Hammer Drill Kit is. I don't want to buy the wrong thing. Is there anyone who can recommend one?? And possibly explain the difference?? Thank you.

From what I can read from DeWalt's site the only difference between the two is that the kit comes with a case, where the other would probably just come in a box.
You might want to try Home Depot or Lowes. Sometimes they've got the hammer drill kits that come with a bonus package of Drill Bits ($30.00 if you were to buy them separate), at no extra cost.
