Steel Pipe

Evidence of railings made from wrought iron can be found as back as 17th century. During that time, the concept of working on metals had justed started and the railings made from iron were treated as act of art.

Though the railings prepared from wrought iron are quite durable and resistant to corrosion, these are not shock tolerant and the railings tend to break if something drops on them. Any snap in the railing would spoil the appearance of the hand railing or whole staircase. If you can manage the repairs, you might be able to restore the original form of the railing by yourself.

Tools needed for Repair of wrought Iron Railings

You may repair railings of wrought iron and bring back its nearly original form if repair is done with care, but repair will be repair, and not its original position. The various tools available for repairs can be obtained from any DIY store. You need to procure:

1. Machine for drilling

2. Riveting set

3. Drill Bits in sizes of 3/8" or 1/4"

4. Glue Cement

5. Hack saw

6. Tools required for woodwork

7. Metal Cement

8. Smoother

Techniques for repair of Pipes of Railings

It is a difficult task to weld railings which have been made from wrought iron and despite the fact that when railings have been welded, and a pipe after welding has chances of breaking again and can result in a dangerous mishap. Hence, ensure that you do not weld the broken pipes.

However, you can repair the cracked pipe by putting supports inside the broken pipe, i.e. by inserting a turned wooden pole or a steel pipe of internal diameter of pipe. The pipe needs to be unfastened out of the railings and carried to a DIY store and then the necessary repairs done like putting supports inside. The ends can then be fixed with glue or metal cement.

If the inner lining of pipe of wrought iron is uneven, you can just twist the wooden pole a little bit more to fit it inside the pipe with no force or without the use of a hammer on the wooden portion. If force is applied, the pipe made of wrought iron will be useless and will not be in a position to be repaired.

Understand that broken wrought iron railings become strong by inserting a wooden pole or steel pipe inside it. The glue is merely used to give it a outer structure and not making it strong. If there are more than two pieces in the wrought iron railing, one needs to carefully fit these before applying glue or riveting. Just ensure that all the pieces get joined together and the wooden pole or internal pipe is not noticeable from outside.

Fixing Poles or Base of Wrought Iron Railings

If the base of railings has developed cracks or the eyelet of railing pipe requires repairs, stich welding must be done to repair it. There are many companies who specialize in this kind of repair and sometimes provide guarantee as well. The chances of eyelets or base of railings cracking are not very frequent and if these get cracked, it is advisable to leave them in the hands of the experts as this requires expertise. If you attempt yourself to do it in a DIY way, chances are that you will fail.

however, for the same amount of material, the pipe would be stronger because there is less material along the center plane, and that material contributes very little to the strength.

2001 honda cr125,oil leak around head pipe and silencer spoosh,what can i do?

Like i said,It's a 2001 Honda cr125, and it has a bad oil leak around the head pipe and silencer spoosh, it leaks everytime i start it up,and I'm really gettin tired of spending an hour cleanin it up,I know I need a new exhaust system for sure,but i don't want to put one on yet,if it's going to keep leaking oil,it'll just ruin the new set. head pipe? silencer spoosh? geez man, what the heck are you talkin' about? I can only guess you mean where the exhaust attaches to the motor ? If you don't get the gas/oil mix ratio correct additional oil may exit the exhaust. However, if it is engine oil, you probably need to have the 2-stroke block bored or honed as the oil is blowing by the rings. Is there a real loss of power when the bike is cold? is it hard to start cold, but starts easily when warm? Is the exhaust gasket worn? It sounds to me like rings, but without looking at it, it is impossible to know.

the wall-building duo

I started building a new wall at home with a borrowed pair (drill and driver like this set, but Panasonic). I had to return them before the wall was finished and decided I could not live without the functions once I had the pleasure of cordless power. After reading everything I could find (wood working forums, reviews, talking to sales guys and my friends about their brands) I chose the Milwaukee kit for its low price on Amazon. 
The drill/driver is perfect for putting drywall screws in - set the clutch and it auto-stops at just the right place. The impact driver is perfect for the outside of my wall, where I had to put screws into wood panelling. You could use the drill/driver for the wood side of the wall, but it requires so much torque in the last few turns of the screw that I wasn't getting consistent screw depth. And you can use the impact driver for the gyproc side of the wall, but you have to pay careful attention to releasing the trigger or you drive the screw right through the wallboard. 

It seems as though all the brands of LiIon 18V cordless tools have the combination of some electronic circuitry in the Battery Pack and some in the charger casing. I was disappointed to discover this because I was hoping to be able to charge the battery packs with my smart charger (designed for radio-control batteries) at lower charging rates when I wasn't in a hurry. The Milwaukee charger is fixed at 3Amps. 
Some high powered bike lights use LiIon batteries and put the entire charging circuit in the battery pack so that all the external "charger" does is feed a DC voltage in. Putting some of the circuit in the battery packs makes each one quite expensive. Putting some of it in the external charger makes it also quite expensive (the Milwaukee charger seems comparatively expensive against other brands). Anyway, for most users these concerns are irrelevant. 
The Led Light on each unit is well aimed and quite bright. The balance of the units feels good in the hand. They are compact enough to get the screws into the wall against the ceiling where there isn't much space (and my corded drill failed miserably at the same task). The trigger is sensitive and easy to control the bit speed. 

If they last a long time then they'll be perfect for my household tasks.

Compact and powerful

Both tools are lightweight and powerful. The impact driver is extremely useful for various projects. The drill has 2 speeds and several power selections for torque. My only minor quirk about the drill is selecting between low and high rpm - if you are not careful, it will not engage all the way, but not a biggie. The controls are located logically and the LED light is spot on for me. I'm a DYI'er so the batteries last plenty long for me and hold the charge for a long time. If you are a contractor, I'd recommend getting the larger capacity batteries which will also add bulk and weight.

Milwaukee M18 Drills and the comfort of their grip

I only want to comment about one thing on these tools. The palms of my hands are wide, XL size when I buy gloves. I tried gripping all the better quality 18 volt drills: Makita, Bosch, Dewalt, and Ridgid. Only the Milwaukee felt comfortable and didn't feel like I was trying to get a wide foot into a shoe that was too narrow. The DeWalt gave my palm enough room but there's a raised piece on the plastic handle under the trigger that dug into my middle finger after awhile. As far as the quality of the Milwaukee M18 tools I'll give them 5 stars there also. 

Hint: Buy a Milwaukee High Capacity Battery (#48-11-1828) as a backup third battery if you think you'll need more runtime. They fit on the same charger, and then save a lot of money by only buying bare tools in the future as you need them. You'll save on chargers, batteries, and cases you don't need.

I've bought an estate pipe and would like to sanitize it before smoking. How is this best accomplished?

I also much prefer a cleaning method that minimizes the taste of tobacco remnant in the pipe, which usually does not match my personal preferences.

Materials Needed

You will need alcohol to dissolve residues and leach out tobacco juices that have soaked into the wood of the bowl and shank. I prefer grain alcohol, but 151-proof rum, any distilled spirits, or isopropyl alcohol or ethanol from the drug store will all work fine. Likewise "sterilizing solution" (grain alcohol sold via medical supplies channels) and "technical alcohol"(sold via industrial supply channels). Before using isopropyl or other alcohols not expressly intended for drinking, smell it. If you would not like that taste in your pipe, you need to find one with a different denaturant, that hasa pleasing or at least a neutral aroma.

You will need chlorine laundry bleach to soak and sanitize the mouthpiece. Chlorox works fine, as do other laundry bleaches.

You will need pipe cleaners, of course. Those that have bristly plastic fibers in them help clean out heavy residues of crud, and you may need both fat ("fluffy") and skinny regular pipe cleaners. Pipe shops usually have little brushes, that look like tiny bottle brushes, that can be used to clean the interior of shank and mouthpiece.

And you will need salt. Regular table salt is fine. It does not need to be iodized, but it is ok if it is.

You will need paper towels to wipe up alcohol spilled. The alcohol will remove wax from the pipe, and dissolve or leach out stain and pigments applied to give the pipe a pleasing color and appearance, so use care. I know I will always spill some alcohol on a pipe being throughly cleaned, so the first thing I do is wipe the pipe down with a paper towel wet with alcohol. This lightens the color evenly, and after the cleaning and sanitizing is finished I use a Dunhill Pipe Care Cloth to wax and restore the finish to something I find acceptable in appearance.

You may need tools to ream the bowl. The old Kleen Ream adjustable tool does a good job on the walls, but does not do too well with carbon in the bottom of the bowl. It is no longer made, but there is a modern version with a different name (?El Senior?). I have a set of four Pip Net reamers made by a Swiss company that I like, because they do a good job on the bottom of the bowl, but some pipes are too large or two small for them. Coarse sandpaper, wrapped round a wooden dowel or even a finger, can be used for reducing the thickness of the carbon cake in lieu of a tool, and some prefer it despite it being a bit more work to use. It is also cheap. The adjustable reamer, or a set of reamers, will usually cost $30 to $40 new, though you may be able to get one used for a fraction of that price.

Finally, you may want to use buffing and polishing compounds on the mouthpiece, or take the cleaned pipe in to a pipe shop and have them do the buffing and polishing. The cost is usually small. As mentioned, I use a Dunhill Pipe Care Cloth to wax a cleaned pipe, but one can also get a can of Briar Wipe from a pipe shop and use it to make Your Own "pipe care cloth."

1. Sanitizing the Bowl

The bowl will be sanitized wherever heated thoroughly by combustion of tobacco. If the previous owner did not smoke to the bottom of the bowl, you will need to deal with this area in the manner described for the shank,below. Otherwise, simply ream the carbon cake in the bowl to the thickness of a dime or less (1 mm or less).

2. Sanitizing the Mouthpiece

Remove the mouthpiece from the pipe. If stuck, try putting it in the refrigerator or a freezer for 15 to 20 minutes and then turning it to free up and remove it.

Remove any metal gadgets or filters. If you expect to sell the pipe later, clean them and put them in storage. Otherwise, discard them. If stuck, you may need to soak the mouthpiece in alcohol to dissolve the crud and allow removal.

Use pipe cleaners wet with alcohol to scrub the interior and exterior of the mouthpiece clean. First soaking the mouthpiece in alcohol makes it easier to get the crud out with the pipe cleaners.

Once clean and dry, use vaseline, cold cream, or any protective coating to cover any logos or lettering on the mouthpiece you wish to keep. Otherwise, the bleach will dissolve them. Apply to a clean dry surface, or the protective coating may detach and allow bleach to go under it and destroy.

Then soak the mouthpiece in chlorine laundry bleach. Check the mouthpiece after a couple of hours, and if the mouthpiece is rapidly dissolving remove it, rinse it, and go on to the next process in cleaning. Otherwise, I would leave the mouthpiece in the bleach overnight, or perhaps for a full 24 hours, before taking it out and rinsing it. Clean one last time with an alcohol-wet pipe cleaner, and if more crud comes out put the mouthpiece back in the bleach for a longer soak.

If a metal gadget breaks off in the mouthpiece, you can soak the mouthpiece in bleach until the metal is dissolved. Use a pipe cleaner a couple of times a day to remove any corroded metal that will flake off, and eventually all will dissolve and corrode away. It may take a week or more, but it works.

After the chlorine bleach soak, the mouthpiece will be very rough. You can leave it as is, rub it with olive oil, or use buffing compounds and polishes to smooth and polish the surface. Or have a pipe shop buff and polish it for you. I used to use a multi-speed Dremel tool with felt buffing wheels, emery, tripoli, white, and plastic buffing compounds, and the Dunhill Pipe Care Cloth for waxing. A Fordham or big buffing wheels work better, faster, and easier, but are much more expensive. If you have the big buffing wheels, Tripoli Green for rough work, Diamond White for a smooth finish, and carnauba wax for the ultimate in gloss works fine, but you will need a little practice to gain skill.

I now have a set of 8-inch buffing wheels. There is a world of difference, but also considerable difference in cost.

3. Leaching and Sanitizing the Shank

While the mouthpiece is soaking or being worked on, sit the pipe up so the lowest part of the bowl opening and the lowest part of the opening in the shank are about level. Fill the bowl and shank with alcohol. Use of an eye dropper makes filling without spilling easy.

Allow the alcohol to sit for hours, topping up every hour or so if the alcohol is evaporating rapidly. Then dump out the alcohol, wipe out the interior of the bowl with a piece of paper towel, and use alcohol-wet pipe cleaners to clean out and scrub the interior of the shank. This is where the bristly pipe cleaners and little brush come in handy.

How long to let the alcohol sit in the bowl is a matter of choice. I recommend at least 4 hours, and often fill the bowl and shank first thing in the morning and (after topping up several times during the day) dump the alcohol and clean the shank that evening. I scrub the interior of the shank until no brown residues remain, and the wood is bare and clean. If there are no brown residues for the pipe cleaners to pick up, but they are turning yellow from tobacco juices leached from the wood, I will sit the pipe up again, refill with alcohol, and leach the bowl and shank with alcohol again.

4. The Professor's Pipe-Sweetening Treatment

To complete sanitizing the pipe, and finish up leaching residues from the wood, fill the bowl and shank with a slurry of salt and alcohol, sit the pipe up, and leave it until all the alcohol evaporates.

First fill the shank with salt, and using an eye dropper add alcohol until that salt is saturated. Then fill the bowl perhaps two-thirds full of salt, and add alcohol until that is saturated. Then, finish filling the bowl with salt, sit the pipe up as it had been when filled with alcohol, and add more alcohol until any more alcohol would spill out.

When all alcohol has evaporated (usually 2 to 7 days later, depending on the weather and humidity), dump all the salt out and clean the pipe one last time with alcohol-wet pipe cleaners. If they come out dirty, you may need to do some more cleaning.

Allow the wood to dry. Then reassemble the pipe, with attention to the fit of the mouthpiece in the shank. Usually the fit will be ok. Sometimes it will be too tight, and you will need to coat the tenon of the mouthpiece with beeswax, or scribble pencil lead on it, or use graphite lubricant. If too loose, use beeswax to coat the tenon (when the shank becomes warm from the smoke, the beeswax will penetrate into the wood and cause it to swell slightly, tightening up the fit), or put a little water or saliva on the wood inside the mortise to encourage the wood to swell. If terribly loose, you may need to heat the tenon, shove a tapered metal cylinder into it to expand it(a nail set works ok, and sets of tapered cylinders can be had for about $10 that are made specifically for this purpose), and coolthe tenon under running water. Check for fit. If too tight, heat and allow to cool, which will cause the rubber to shrink back toward original shape and size. If still too loose, repeat the expansion process.

If your cleaning has removed all, or almost all, of the carbon cake in the bottom of the bowl, or if there was none to start with, you will need to break in the pipe as if it were new. Otherwise, simply load up the pipe, light up, and enjoy.

At one time plumbers sealed the joints of black iron pipe with hot, liquid lead. Today, however, sewer pipes are joined with clamps and neoprene gaskets.

Most galvanized pipes are threaded. They can be screwed together without any preparation, but the joint will leak until it rusts shut. It is also very dif

ficult to turn the pipes. Teflon Tape makes the job easier and seals the joints as well. Be careful though. Teflon makes the threads turn so easily that you can tighten them too far and break the pipe.

Copper Tubing is usually soldered. Clean the joint with steel wool or sandpaper. Do not touch the joint after cleaning. Your fingers may leave some grease that will repel the solder. Apply a light coat of noncorrosive soldering flux to the ends to be joined, both inside and out. Assemble the joint exactly as it will be when finished.

Now light a propane torch. When the flame settles down, move the torch so the blue tip of the flame is 1/2 to 3/4 inch from the joint. Heat the entire joint and along the tubing for 2 to 3 inches in all directions. Watch where you're pointing the flame. Heat until the flux begins to boil. Do not overheat.

Remove the torch and touch the solder to the end of the joint. If the joint is clean and fluxed and has been heated to the right temperature, the solder will melt immediately and flow through the whole joint. Do not move the joint until the solder has cooled. If the joint is too hot, the solder will not stick. In this case, use pliers to pull the flame settles down, move the torch so the blue tip of the flame is 1/2 to 3/4 inch from the joint. Heat the entire joint and along the tubing for 2 to 3 inches in all directions. Watch where you're pointing the flame. Heat until the flux begins to boil. Do not overheat.

It is impossible to solder a wet joint. Even a drop of water is too much. If you've turned off all the valves and opened every faucet, and water still trickles through the line, stuff some bread uphill in the line. This will stop the water long enough to solder. Later when you turn on the water, the bread will dissolve and be flushed out the nearest faucet.

Plastic Pipe joints are the same as copper tubing joints except they are cemented instead of being soldered. After cutting and cleaning the edges with a file and knife, brush cement around the outside of the pipe and the inside of the fitting. Plastic cement is really a solvent that dissolves the plastic surface. When it evaporates (in about 10 seconds) the joint is fused. This doesn't give you much time to position the joint and wipe away the excess cement. After plastic pipe has been glued, there is no way to take it apart except by cutting.

Use plastic cement with great care. Avoid breathing the fumes and keep it away from eyes, mouth and skin.

Before soldering copper tubing, clean the ends to be joined. Use sandpaper, steel wool, or a wire brush. Then with your finger or with an old toothbrush apply flux to the surfaces being joined. Use a light coat, but cover the area completely.Visit here http://plumbingsupply-copperorg.blogspot.com

Depends on the pipe... What's it made of? What pressures will it have to tolerate? What structural loads will it have to handle?

ANY fluid could be used to reach any desired temperature. You can heat water under pressure to a point where its "state" is undefined.. not really water, not really steam.... but that's not the maximum temperature you can achieve. The pressure required would be high...
